Rosacea

What is it?

Rosacea is a common chronic skin condition that affects parts of the face. The most common symptoms of rosacea is persistent flushing of the skin, permanent redness, visible blood vessels under the skin surface with a burning or stinging sensation to the affected area and spots or bumps . In most severe cases you can develop thickened skin around the nose, and cheeks and irritation around the eyes can occur.

Your aesthetician will advice you to make a log of when your Rosacea flair ups tend to happen to help you pin point what is causing it. She will also advice you to avoid known triggers where possible, to reduce symptoms including to avoid sun exposure where possible and always wear a high factor SPF.

If you suffer with vascular Rosacea, which includes flushing, redness, and thread veins these symptoms can be successfully treated with laser or IPL to collapse the vessel making it shrink or even disappear entirely

What causes it

It is not known exactly what causes Rosacea however it is normally hereditary and passed on through genes. We also all have tiny mites called Demodex folliculorum that live on the skin they usually are not harmful but some people may have more of these than usual and so they can cause irritation to the skin.Bacteria in your gut can also cause the skin to look flushed.
